Ford Freestyle Crossover Makes Global Debut in India

Ford has finally unveiled its Figo hatchback based crossover for India and the global audience. Called the Ford Freestyle, this new compact utility vehicle (CUV) will go on sale in the second quarter of 2018. This new crossover will lock horns against cars like Hyundai i20 Active, Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Urban Cross. Globally, the Freestyle is sold as the ‘Ka Cross’; however, the India-spec version receives multiple design and feature updates. In Ford’s Indian product lineup, the crossover sits above the Figo hatchback, and shares most of its design bits, features and mechanism with its donor sibling. Similar to the EcoSport facelift, the Ford Freesytle uses the new 94bhp, 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Dragon series petrol engine. And the diesel powertrain has been carried over from the standard Figo hatch – i.e. 100bhp, 1.5L TDCI unit.

Ford Freestyle Launch

Just so you know, the American carmaker isn’t participating in this year’s Delhi Auto Expo. Therefore, the company has chosen to showcase its product just prior to the biennial event. The Freestyle crossover has made its global debut on 31st January 2018 in an event in Delhi. Ford has confirmed that the crossover will be rolled out in the second quarter of 2018.

Ford Freestyle Price In India

Minimum Rs 5.5 lakh
Maximum Rs 8.5 lakh

With attributes such as additional body kit and a raft of new equipment (including touchscreen infotainment system as standard), Ford’s new cross-hatchback will be priced slightly higher than the Figo hatch. We believe that the new model could be priced as low as Rs 5.5 lakh for the base model and Rs 8.5 lakh for the tops-spec variant.

Ford Freestyle Exterior

As mentioned above, the Freestyle crossover shares strong resemblance with the Figo hatchback. However, it carries more rugged and commanding stance. Styling bits such as additional body cladding, black plastic, roof rails and new Mustang-inspired hexagonal grille enhance it a crossover-ish appearance. Upfront, the car gets sportier sweptback headlamps with LED DRLs (daytime running lights), unique grille with three-dimensional mesh, pronounced bonnet, fog lamp bezel and blacked-out high contrast on the front bumper with integrated skid plate and sculpted fascia sections. The black plastic cladding is running across the sides and wheel arches giving it a sporty look.

The side profile of the car is accentuated by twin-spoke black alloy wheels and roof rails. Riding the crossover are the large and wider 1185/60 R15 tyres. The ground clearance of the new model is also higher than the regular Figo hatchback. It stands on 185mm of ground clearance, which is 15mm higher than its donor sibling.

Ford Freestyle Interior

Interior design and features, too, have been carried over from the Figo hatchback. Though, it’s more feature-loaded and premium than its younger sibling. It gets an updated dashboard and a new 6.5-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system that we have already seen on the new EcoSport. The crossover also gets Ford’s SYNC3 in-car infotainment system, which is compatible to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Ford Freestyle Specifications

Petrol Engine 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, TiVCT
Max Power 94bhp (96PS)
Max Torque 120Nm
Diesel Engine 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder
Max Power 100bhp
Max Torque 205Nm
Gearbox New 5-speed Manual

Engine setup of Ford’s new compact UV includes a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, TiVCT petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel unit. The former one is a Dragon family all-aluminium motor, which is essentially the stripped down version of the 1.5-litre engine that also does duty in the EcoSport compact SUV. This Dragon series gasoline unit delivers best-in-class power and torque figures. It churns out a top power of 94bhp (96PS) and 120Nm of torque, thus making it more powerful than Honda’s 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and Maruti’s 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engines. On the other hand, the diesel version of the crossover derives its power from a 1.5-litre engine producing a maximum power output of 100bhp against 205Nm of torque.

Ford Freestyle Mileage (Expected)

Petrol 18kmpl
Diesel 25kmpl

Similar to its hatch sibling, the cross-hatch is high on fuel efficiency. Available with both petrol and diesel engine options, the Freestyle will return a mileage around 18kmpl and 25kmpl respectively.

Ford Freestyle Safety Features

Safety duties on the crossover are taken care of by the standard dual airbags, ABS (Anti-lock braking system) with EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution) and engine immobilizer. The high-spec trim, additionally, gets six airbags, Active Rollover Prevention (ARP), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS).
