Hyundai Kona Compact SUV Teased
Hyundai has confirmed its upcoming global sub-compact SUV while revealing a teaser image. Called the Hyundai Kona, this compact SUV will be slotted between Creta and Tucson in India, and go up against the upcoming Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR. That said, the name of the vehicle is derived from Hawaii’s biggest Island, which is known for its coffee production and also noted for the afternoon sea breeze (the Kona Wind). Interestingly, the Hyundai Kona will be the fourth and the smallest SUV from the South Korean carmaker. Designed on the i20 hatchback platform, the Kona is reported to enter into production from June 2017.
Hyundai’s Ulsan-based facility in Korea will serve as production hub for the compact SUV. Since this new compact SUV is under development, technical and other details are quite scanty. Reports suggest that the new Kona SUV will make its world premiere in concept avatar at the 2017 New York Auto Show. As a reminder, the SUV was first showcased as Intrado concept in 2014. Since it will be based on i20 hatchback, the engine setup and gearbox will be carried over from the former. Hyundai claims that its upcoming new compact SUV will offer best-in-class cabin space and features.
Hyundai Kona India Launch
While the South Korean carmaker is tight-lipped about its ‘Kona’ project, the rumour has it that the compact SUV will make its first appearance at the 2017 New York Auto Show in April. Hyundai had announced its plan of introducing four new SUVs in India in the next couple of years including Carlino, new-gen Santa Fe and i20-based compact SUV. Hyundai’s all-new sub-compact SUV might hit the Indian shores within the next 15 months. This means, we can expect it see running on roads sometime next year.
