Volkswagen Tiguan SUV Production Begins In India

Volkswagen, the German automaker has recently announced that it will launch the Tiguan SUV and new Passat sedan in India this year. The all-new Volkswagen Tiguan will be the first product to hit showrooms towards the end of April or early May 2017. Now, the company has announced the starting of production of the SUV at its Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra. As a reminder, the Tiguan SUV had its Indian debut at the 2016 Auto Expo in Greater Noida.

It is the first Volkswagen Group’s SUV based on the MQB (modular transverse matric) platform that also underpins the Golf and the 2017 Skoda Octavia. This architecture makes it 50kgs lighter and spacious than the previous generation model. VW is currently testing the SUV in Indian conditions and test mules have already been spotted several times around Pune. In India, the Tiguan is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI turbocharged diesel engine that belts out 177bhp and 350Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The top-end model will also get VW’s all-wheel-drive system.

The Tiguan SUV will be launched as VW India’s flagship product and is likely to be priced in the range of Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. When launched, it will rival against the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CRV, Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
